Hatin' it.
Boy do teams like to hate us. One of my teammates this weekend said "Rutgers, CMU and Pitt B have Pitt's back...everyone else is against us." I'd add Florida to the list, but yeah. The Colonial hates us, perhaps because we've turned "Yellow Sunday" into "Black Sabbath" perhaps because there were contentious calls going both ways in the Udel game and the crowd was pro-Udel, so we heard it all day long. Perhaps because players on our team play with passion and dont joke around on the field as much as other teams do.
Whatever, the reason, I am okay with it in the end- I'm still going to Columbus afterall. I was still part of taking a team that was one of the absolute worst teams in the Region when I got here and helping it to take itself seriously and now be one of three (?) teams to get back to back births to Nats out of the ME. Actually, maybe thats it- we arent from the Colonial/Philly area and don't play ME tournaments, so they dont like the new kid on the block.
Maaaybe, its because we travel to play the best competition we can, and people see that as us seeing ourselves as superior. I did find it odd to see one of the Haters out at the fields giving his two sense to all calls made when he equated finding the best players in the ME to looking through feces; no matter that some of those players were/are his teammates and almost all of those players (ME all region) are much better players than he is. I just would have thought that if you look down on a group of people so much, you wouldnt waste your time coming to watch them...but then again maybe we arent the ones with the superior attitude afterall.....
Whatever it is, people can hate. We go out and spend our season trying to bring respect to the region. Then we come home to regionals and get boo'd and cheered against.
While I am writing about it, its more a matter of trying to figure out the motivation than it is making me feel bad or whatever. I'm sure I'll get some angry comments about how the Colonial teams arent all butt buddies and how people hate Pitt because we make shitty calls or whatever...don't hear all the other good teams we play complaining about us...we here teams like Harvard, NC State, Florida, and others telling us it was a good hard-fought battle. Sure there are the occasional Colorado State's, but you run into blatant cheaters every once in a while [Nice dive into the mark foul call after a stall had already been called Pre ;-) ].

WHy does Florida have Pitt's back?
There is hate. I can understand a little of it. I think they're just jealous they don't have such a plethera of great recievers to throw to ;)
well, Florida gave us props as "College Series" on rsd last year. And they give us props on Collegeulti.com this year.
Looking back on this post a couple of days later, I am much less fired up about the whole hatred thing...Tony equates it to people hating the Yankees b/c they win a lot. I suppose that may be part of it.
Also...current GW is cool, and Ed Van Leer...I like those guys, I have to say its mostly the alumni of those teams that irk me...but I also probably have something against most of them for stomping on Pitt when we were god awful.
Regarding the feces quote:
It doesn't mean that there aren't great players in the ME, it's just that you have to look through a lot of shit to find them.
I see...
Firstly, I think you guys have New England Patriots syndrome. No one considers you an underdog anymore. If you want to keep using that to pump you up, that's cool, but it's all in your head, and if you hold onto that mentality for as long as the Pats have, it starts to get annoying. I'm not saying it's reached that point with Pitt, but just a warning...
Secondly, I am disappointed that you would manufacture a dislike on our part to build yourself up. The type of dislike you describe simply does not exist here. Furthermore, some form of hatred is a natural part of sport, at least on the field. For example, we're great friends with all the Delaware guys off the field, but we've been in all sorts of heated debates and confrontations with them. It is easy to confuse intensity and competitive drive with hate.
Thirdly, everyone who has ever been a bad program has been stomped on. It's part of the nature of sport, the nature of competition. Would you ever say that all the stomping-on you received in the past did not served as motivation to get better? As much as I dislike your "we-own-you" remarks on our tradition of "Yellow Sunday," I am motivated to do whatever I need to do in order to regain our former glory next year.
hello, dave.
Firstly, have no fear, even when we are no longer considered underdogs in the region (which I dont think we are), we will still be underdogs in the big pond, so don't fear that mentality going away any time soon.
Secondly, I dont think that you, or your team in general hate us, but that there are certainly people from the colonial (mostly alumni) who do. Being almost a month removed from regionals now though, maybe so, maybe not, it dont really matter. Sorry to dissapoint you though.
Thirdly, I can wrap my head around the idea that bad teams lose, yeah...I get that. My point was that teams that are perennial favorites/top dawgs, may not like us because now they have to contend with us. That was the idea there.
Congrats to the colonial for 5 out of 7 all-region players.
